I've long wondered why the American iTunes Store offers better video (movie and television) content than the Canadian store. According to this article, it has to do with Canadian regulations regarding broadcast rights.
In the States, Apple can negotiate directly with the content providers to sell T.V. shows and movies for download. If Apple wants to sell a T.V. show, they deal directly with the company that sells it. In Canada, the networks also have rights over Internet-based distribution of content, so negotiations must include them.
Although this solves the mystery, it doesn't make me very happy. Because we're a smaller market here in Canada, it's not worthwhile for Apple to jump through the additional hoops necessary to bring video content to our iTunes store.
I guess the 'T.V. Shows' icon in iTunes is useless if you happen to be north of the border. And AppleTV? Not even worth bothering with...
